The Seed of the Word
It appears to me that when the word of the Lord is spoken it does not fail. I am not speaking merely of the Lord's sovereign will and the things he does and speaks into existence but I am speaking of the scripture itself. The word is like an abundance of seeds. Now obviously the parable of the sower of seeds comes to mind. But what I mean to say is that it is impossible for the word of the Lord to fail when it is put on good soil. "the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace." (Colossians 1:6) When it is heard and understood, it grows. The message I am extracting or "exegeting" out of this verse is the fact that the word of the Lord grows when it is put on good soil.
The word of the Lord is perfect and does not fail. It is right and true and sanctifies us accordingly. I think what it comes down to is the ground in which it is planted as a seed. Acts 13:48 said that when they heard, all who were appointed to eternal life believed. It is clear in Scripture that the election and regeneration happens before the believing. We need to have a new heart and a good heart of flesh before we can believe. Those who are given a good heart of soil can grow in the word without the word failing because it appears the word does not fail but when the word is rejected by the hard rocky soil, it is not a personal rejection by the heart but it seems the heart is so hard and rocky that it does not reject the seeds but the seeds don't even make it to the soil. They never take root. They never grow because there is nowhere for it to grow out of.
